NW mother to re-appear in court for murder of baby─── 08:14 Sat, 10 Jul 2021
The case against 28-year-old Miemie Mokoena, who allegedly murdered her one-month-old baby, will proceed on the 19th of July for bail application.
This follows the suspect's first appearance before the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate's Court.
According to National Prosecuting Authority's (NPA) North West spokesperson, Henry Mamothame, Mokoena remains in police custody until her next court appearance.
"Upon conducting an intensive investigation, police went to interrogate Mokoena and she confessed to committing the crime. She is being charged with murder, perjury and defeating the ends of justice," says Mamothame.
He says the suspect reportedly called the police to her home and registered a case of kidnapping.
She then allegedly told the police that two men, armed with a knife and a firearm, came to her residence and took her baby away. The two were allegedly looking for her lover, Mamothame says.
Preliminary police investigations revealed that a community member who walked past a small river in the area spotted the lifeless body of an infant floating in the water. She then reported the matter to members of the community, who later alerted the police.
