#NationalShutdown: FS ANC and alliances call for calm | News Article

The ANC and its alliance partners in the Free State are calling for calm amidst violent acts in parts of the country.

The party, in a joint statement together with the SACP, COSATU and SANCO, says no acts of violence and rampant looting should be allowed in the province. The statement comes as the provinces of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal have been battling with violence and lawlessness the entire week - with several malls looted and set alight.

The alliance partners confirm that they had a virtual meeting to find common ground and to discuss the ongoing violence grappling the two provinces as well as measures on how to keep the Free State calm.

"The alliance political leadership jointly calls for continued restraint and calm in the province in light of ongoing acts of violence and instability going on in various parts of the country. It further urges its structures and communities to resist and desist from participating in such destructive acts, and work with law enforcement agencies to quell any lawlessness from taking root".

Meanwhile, Ministers in the economic and security clusters on Wednesday confirmed there will be more police visibility at shopping centers across the country even in provinces that are still calm.

Members of the SAPS are accompanied by members of the SANDF across all provinces.

The party further highlights that is it important for organisations of civil society and businesses to stand in solidarity in order to work together in safeguarding people and properties.
