The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the North West confirms a senior NPA prosecutor will have to appear in court on August 17.

This, after a sexual offence case against a 45-year-old suspended NPA prosecutor was postponed by the Lichtenburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday. NPA Spokesperson, Henry Mamothame, says the case was postponed for further investigations. He confirms the state has also appointed a prosecutor from another division to prosecute on this case, to avert any perceptions of bias.

Mamothame in a statement further confirms the suspect, based in the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, is being charged with statutory rape, sexual exploitation of children, sexual display or causing display of pornography, sexual grooming of children and sexual assault.

It is alleged that the victim was 15 years of age in 2019 when these offences were committed.

"The state requested the court for a postponement to allow further investigations by the police and to afford the new prosecutor time to thoroughly study the docket," he said.

The 45-year-old suspect remains suspended from duty and his bail of of R10 000 is extended until his next court appearance.
