#SAunrest: Roads leading to hard-hit provinces monitored─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 11:37 Fri, 16 Jul 2021
The police are closely monitoring routes leading to Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, including the popular N3 passing through Harrismith in the Free State.
This is according to the South African Police Service, briefing the Portfolio Committee on Police. The online briefing, inclusive of the Hawks and other law enforcers, follows days of unrest in parts of the country with acts of violence and rampant looting witnessed in the provinces of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
The Hawks' Head, General Godfrey Lebeya, also told the committee that in addition to the efforts taken by the police, 12 individuals alleged to have been engaged in online activities to instigate public violence, have been identified. Lebeya highlighted that he would not reveal the names of instigators at this stage, but could confirm that three have been prioritised by the Directorate for Priority Crime.
“I would like to plea to the community in general, that they should keep reporting instigators in their areas. We appreciate the information that they share with us. We welcome the information received, it will help us when we take the necessary actions and go to court,” said Lebeya.
