NW Legislature adds its voice to condemn looting─── LUCKY NKUYANE 13:45 Fri, 16 Jul 2021
The North West Provincial Legislature (NWPL) has added its voice in condemning the looting of both public and private businesses in parts of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).
The Legislature's speaker, Sussana Dantjie, in a statement says the political parties represented in the Legislature strongly condemns the looting. According to president Cyril Ramaphosa, 95 people have been declared dead in that province following the looting, with over 1000 people in custody. Ramaphosa visited numerous places in KZN, including KwaMashu.
Dantjie has called upon communities in the country, including the province, to protect and respect the rule of law. The protest in the two provinces was allegedly sparked by the incarceration of former President Jacob Zuma, following the 15-month prison sentence by the Constitutional Court.
Dantjie adds that they also appreciated work done by President Cyril Ramaphosa and the security cluster, including the South African Police Service, for a sterling job in handling the volatile situation in the country.
She and the political parties at the Legislature have commended the communities that have worked hand in hand with the law enforcement structures to protect the economic infrastructure from these looters.
“We urge our communities to join the masses and volunteer in the cleaning up campaigns, and call for calm and peace within our province. We further appreciate work done by all leaders of society who have joined hands with the government to ensure that there is peace and stability in the country,” Dantjie further adds.
Meanwhile, Ramaphosa, accompanied by KZN premier Sihle Zikalala, Minister Bheki Cele, Minister Ayanda Dlodlo and Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, received a briefing from the SAPS outside the Bridge City Shopping Centre which was looted and burnt a few days ago.
