The case against a 28-year-old North West mother accused of murdering her 1-month-old baby had been postponed.

Miemie Mokoena appeared before the Garankuwa Magistrate's Court on Monday where her case was postponed to 11 August for further investigations. OFM News previously reported that the body of the baby was found in June, abandoned in a river after the mother registered a case of kidnapping.

Mokoena had previously told the police that she was accosted by two men armed with a knife and a firearm at her shack in Itsoseng phase 2, near Hebron, and they took her baby away. The two were allegedly looking for her lover.

NPA spokesperson in the North West, Henry Mamothame, says preliminary police reports revealed that on June 27, a young girl walking past a small river in Hebron, spotted a lifeless body of an infant floating in the water. She then reported the matter to members of the community, who later alerted the police.

"Upon conducting an intensive investigation, police went to interrogate Mokoena and she confessed to committing the crime. She is being charged for murder, perjury, and defeating the ends of justice," said Mamothame.

Mamothame further confirms Mokoena is due in the same court next month. She was granted bail of R500.

"The state did not oppose bail owing to the accused being cooperative and also having a fixed address. The investigating officer, through an affidavit, further declared the accused not to be a flight risk," added Mamothame.
