Veldfires warning issued in NC─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 05:49 Fri, 23 Jul 2021
Farmers and land users in the Northern Cape are urged to be on high alert for veld fires.
This follows reports of small-holding farmers in the Frances Baard District who lost some of their livestock and grazing land due to veld fires. MEC for Agriculture, Environmental Affairs and Rural Development, Mase Manopole, says the province usually experiences magnitude veld fires during this time of the year.
She says they would like to avoid this, as it often leads to loss of livestock, grazing land and sometimes human life. Manopole in a statement further indicates that there are requirements set out by the Veld and Forest Fire Act, which farmers and land users need to adhere to.
She further warned motorists to refrain from throwing away cigarette butts while driving.
The plea by the Northern Cape government comes just two weeks after OFM News reported on veld fires that wreaked havoc in several parts of the Free State, resulting in huge losses for farmers in the areas of Koffiefontein, Petrusburg, Edenburg, Botshabelo and Thaba 'Nchu.
