Grandmother in NW dies in a fire─── LUCKY NKUYANE 14:41 Wed, 28 Jul 2021
The 86-year-old grandmother died in a shack fire in the Setlagole Village in the Ratlou Local Municipality in the North West.
The granny, who resides in Vriesgewagte near Delareyville in the province, was visiting her daughter at the time of her death. The 86-year-old, identified as Allie Sealogo, died from the fire on Monday afternoon.
This is at least the second fire incident to be reported in the province in which the lives of elderly persons have been lost. Three people, including a couple and their friend, died in Lebaleng in Makwassie near Wolmaransstad on Saturday after a fire destroyed the shack they were sleeping in.
Meanwhile, the MEC for Social Development, Boitumelo Moiloa, has assured Sealogo's family of psycho-social support.
MEC Moiloa has also sent her heartfelt condolences to the family and says it is a sad day to see a frail and older person losing her life in such a manner.
“Normally we warn people of the dangers of an open fire but this time around it appears the cause was not by negligent. We will await the investigations from the relevant authorities on the cause of the suspected explosion. Our officials will continue to offer support to the young children who have been traumatised by this experience," she adds.
Moiloa has also thanked the Red Cross organisation for providing more than 18 blankets to the family.
"The blankets will augment the food parcels that the department provided to the family who rely on social grants," Moiloa adds.
