Embattled Mangaung MM 'resigns'─── LUCKY NKUYANE 06:52 Thu, 29 Jul 2021
The suspended municipal manager (MM) of the troubled Bloemfontein-based Mangaung Metro Municipality in the Free State has resigned from his position.
This is according to Chairperson of the Democratic Alliance in the Mangaung Caucus, David Masoeu.
He says the council was informed on Wednesday that Tankiso Mea tendered his resignation.
Masoeu says independent investigators' report established that most of the charges of misconduct and maladministration against Mea were substantiated.
A source says Mea's last day at the helm is set to be 31 July 2021, but the council is also expected to sit again on Friday 30 July in a closed committee meeting to further deliberate on the report and Mea's resignation letter.
This, as opposition parties in council want to go after Mea despite his resignation.
It's understood that council is seeking legal advice on whether they can continue and discipline Mea for his alleged misconduct.
Mea was suspended in May after a team of independent investigators, including two senior counsellors (SC) - Tebogo Manye and Johan Nel - were appointed to scrutinise his alleged maladaministration and misconduct.
Masoeu says the DA notes the resignation of the suspended Mea.
"We are adamant that the only true reason for his resignation is to avoid accountability for his actions. We will make sure that Mea is held accountable for his misconduct and maladministration charges, which was substantiated by the Independent Investigators," Masoeu further adds.
