A former employee at the Master of the High Court in Kimberley and his accomplice were found guilty and sentenced by the Kimberley Magistrate's Court in the Northern Cape for fraud and money laundering.
The 58-year-old Michael Magoje and 38-year-old Fikile Jacobs were arrested in July 2019, after the Department of Justice in Pretoria had received a fraudulent complaint that were made at the Kimberley Master of the High Court's offices in August 2015. According to the Northern Cape Hawks spokesperson, Thandazo Mnisi, it is alleged that money that was paid to the accused was later claimed by guardians of beneficiaries. This resulted in the department suffering a total loss of about R850 000.
"The two accused made a series of court appearances until they were found guilty and sentenced to six years direct imprisonment on eleven counts of fraud, and four years direct imprisonment for money laundering. Both sentences have been ordered to run concurrently," said Mnisi.
