Cogta set elections for October, IEC to brief media─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 07:08 Wed, 04 Aug 2021
Service delivery should not be affected if local government elections do not go ahead in October 2021.
This is according to the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, Dlamini-Zuma highlighted that current municipal councils will remain in place should there be a postponement of the October elections.
She gazetted 27 October 2021 as the date on which the local government elections will be held unless declared otherwise by the Constitutional Court.
Meanwhile, the Independent Electoral Commission has acknowledged the proclamation of the October polls made by Dlamini-Zuma and stated that the proclamation has a number of implications. The IEC says these include the fact that the voters’ roll for these elections closed at midnight on the 3rd of August, should elections continue.
The IEC, in a statement, further highlights that it will brief the media this morning at 11:00 to update South Africans on the implications of the proclamation of elections.
UPDATE:
News24 reports the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) will urgently approach the Constitutional Court in a bid to have the upcoming local municipal elections moved to early next year.
This is as the clock was ticking for the IEC to prepare for elections in terms of the law.
On Wednesday, the commission said the application was being directed to the Constitutional Court for a number of reasons, and especially because the matter raised weighty issues involving the balancing of rights enshrined in the Constitution.
