Police in the Northern Cape have arrested a 45-year-old man in connection with an armed robbery at a supermarket in Douglas on Sunday evening.

It is alleged that four suspects dressed in blue overalls, armed with firearms, entered a shop, shot, and wounded the owner.

They then fled the scene in a white bakkie. Suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of cash, cigarettes, and other items. The arrested male is believed to be the driver of the getaway vehicle.

Three other suspects abandoned the vehicle after noticing they were being chased by police. Provincial police Spokesperson, Captain Olebogeng Tawana, says three other suspects are still on the run and police have launched a manhunt.

“The incident occurred on Sunday. The suspects entered the supermarket and pretended to be customers. The Kimberley Flying Squad and Provincial Organised Crime Detectives responded immediately, which led to a high-speed pursuit after receiving a lookout report from the Douglas Police. The suspects’ bakkie was spotted 20 kilometres in the direction of Kimberley. Three of the suspects jumped out and fled the scene on foot when they realised that the police were closing in on them. Cash, cigarettes, and other items were found inside the bakkie.“
