MEC welcomes #VBSBank arrest | News Article

The MEC for Cooperative Governance (Gogta) in the North West, Mmoloki Cwaile, has commended law enforcers with the arrest of a former Mahikeng Municipal Manager (MM) linked to the looting of the VBS Bank in the province.

On Tuesday OFM News reported that the 59-year-old suspect was nabbed in Klerksdorp for allegedly receiving bribes to the tune of R1.7 million. Cwaile says he hopes more arrests will follow.

The MEC further says all suspects must explain to the court why they failed in their fiduciary duty, and also account for their deeds.

The former Mahikeng Municipal Manager is no longer with the municipality, following a disciplinary process after it was revealed that the municipality had invested a whopping R92 million with VBS.

Meanwhile, the suspect is on Wednesday expected to appear in the Mahikeng Regional Court to face charges of contravening the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA).

The suspect allegedly received gratification in the form of credit facilities for the purchase of two high-powered vehicles and property in Klerksdorp amounting to over R1.7 million between 2017 and 2018.

Hawks national spokesperson, Katlego Mogale, said of the R92 million, only R7 million was paid back to the Mahikeng Municipality - R85 million was never paid back.

Four municipalities, including Moretele, Mahikeng, Madibeng, and Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati illegally invested R314 million of taxpayers’ money.
