The suspects were arrested after they allegedly stormed the Phuthaditjhaba Police Station, demanding the release of suspects who were arrested in connection with taxi violence on Monday 9 August.

Police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, says following the arrest of 11 suspects for the possession of unlicensed firearms, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and malicious damage to property, amongst other charges, taxi operators went to the police station to demand the release of those arrested.

A group of seven suspects who stormed the police station were then also arrested for public violence.

The group made a brief court appearance on Wednesday where the case was postponed to August 17 for a formal bail application. Makhele confirms they are all remanded in custody. The violence that broke out over the long weekend resulted in 11 taxi tyres being slashed and at least two people seriously assaulted.
