#BreakingNews: NW MEC resigns after gruelling week─── LUCKY NKUYANE 14:13 Thu, 12 Aug 2021
The MEC for Cooperative Governance (Cogta) in the North West has announced his resignation - with immediate effect - on Thursday, following weeks of speculation about his future.
Mmoloki Cwaile's resignation follows after Premier Job Mokgoro last week placed him on special leave without giving any substantial reasons for his actions.
Following the announcement of the special leave last week, Cwaile defied Mokgoro’s directive and stated that, contrary to what was communicated through the media, he was not on suspension and continued to carry out his duties as the MEC.
In a statement on Thursday, Cwaile says “...it is only fair that I should relinquish my duties as MEC". His resignation came into effect Wednesday 11 August 2021, and there is still no clarity as to what led to this. The office of the provincial government is yet to comment on OFM News’ enquiry.
The premier's office has not clarified why Cwaile was put on special leave in the first place. “I wish to appreciate the opportunity the premier has given to me to be part of those adding positive impetus to our people's desires for a better life,” Cwaile says.
