#GBV in #WomensMonth: NC police appeals to communities─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 12:01 Fri, 13 Aug 2021
With Women’s Month celebrations in full swing across the country, the police in the Northern Cape are appealing to communities to report cases of abuse against women and children.
This, after a father has been sentenced to 8 years imprisonment for the attempted rape of his 8-year-old daughter in Carnarvon.
Police spokesperson, Mashay Gamieldien, says the 42-year-old father has been sentenced to jail for an incident that goes back to February 2019.
The Northern Cape’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit’s Head, Nicky Mills, says it is crucial for communities to report cases of abuse and refrain from looking away. Mills, in a statement, says communities must not protect abusers and urged women and children to also not suffer in silence.
Her statement comes days after the country observed the 2021 National Women’s Day with President Cyril Ramaphosa, who acknowledged that more must be done to protect women and children.
