The mayoral candidate of the Bloemfontein-based, cash-strapped Mangaung Metro Municipality (MMM) might have resigned from his speaker position prematurely.

This is according to a source who tells OFM News that there is already a plan in motion amongst ANC members to reject Mxolisi Siyonzana's election as the new mayor on Monday during a council sitting.

OFM News understands that counsellors from towns outside Bloemfontein on Sunday night met and discussed rejecting and not voting for Siyonzana as the new mayor. The source says these councillors want the Mayoral Member of the Committee (MMC) for Transport, Patrick Monyakoane, to replace Siyonzana as Mangaung ANC's Regional Task Team (RTT) chairperson. It's also understood that Free State Women's League chairperson, Mapaseka Nkoane, who contested for the mayoral position against Siyonzana, might be elected as the new speaker during the council sitting.

These councillors accuse Siyonzana of having deliberately ignored calls to hold a regional conference to elect the new leadership. The source says Siyonzana was allegedly concerned that Monyakoane, who has a stronghold in the region, would oust him from the intended position.

Meanwhile, OFM News on Friday 13 August 2021 reported that there was a heavy backlash towards the ANC’s Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) for the election of Siyonzana as the mayoral candidate.

The former spokesperson for the previously disgruntled ANC members, who took the ANC Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) to the High Court over its constitutionality, says the IPC appears as if it’s not interested in resolving all that went wrong.

Monnapule Ntamo told OFM News that the election of Siyonzana as the candidate for the mayoral position is a step backwards and it fails to take into account the damage inflicted on the metro with Siyonzana previously present in the upper echelons.

On Wednesday 11 August, the IPC’s coordinator, Paseka Nompondo, announced Siyonzana as the successful candidate for the mayoral position after interviews with the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) last week. Siyonzana, Mapaseka Nkoane and Millicent Motingoe were all recommended to the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) as mayoral candidates.
