Mangaung Metro: Opposition parties vow to stand together - VIDEOS─── LUCKY NKUYANE 10:24 Mon, 16 Aug 2021
Opposition parties in the Bloemfontein-based Mangaung Metro vow to stand and vote together during the much-anticipated election of the mayor and speaker on Monday.
DA councillor, Hardie Vivier, tells OFM News that the party will also be putting forward its candidate for both mayoral position and speaker.
Freedom Front Plus (FF+) councillor Elizabeth Snyman van Deventer says it's important for opposition councillors to vote with one voice and stick together.
She says the ANC councillors have placed the party's interests above everyone else's, including ordinary citizens.
Meanwhile, the Free State ANC's Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) spokesperson, Oupa Khoabane, says the party is confident that its candidates for mayor and speaker will manage the affairs of the metro well and will deliver to the people.
The metro has been without a mayor since former mayor Olly Mlamleli was ousted during a vote of no confidence in August 2020.
The IPC previously announced Mxolisi Siyonzana as the successful mayoral candidate and he is expected to be elected as the new mayor of the metro after the position had been vacant for a year. The sitting is also set to elect the new speaker after Siyonzana resigned from his position, following his nomination as the mayoral candidate.
OFM News previously reported that according to a source, councillors from nearby towns in Bloemfontein met on Sunday to discuss a motion to reject Siyonzana's election as the new mayor on Monday during the council sitting.
The source says these councillors want the Mayoral Member of the Committee (MMC) for Transport, Patrick Monyakoane, to replace Siyonzana as Mangaung ANC's Regional Task Team (RTT) chairperson.
