#BreakingNews: Mangaung Metro elects new speaker - VIDEO─── LUCKY NKUYANE 11:18 Mon, 16 Aug 2021

The ANC Women's League's Chairperson in the Free State and councillor Mapaseka Nkoane has just been elected as the Mangaung Metro's new speaker.
She received 54 votes against the 24 votes for the DA's David Masoeu. Only 7 votes were spoiled with 85 councillors who registered to vote. A new speaker had to be elected after the former speaker, Mxolisi Siyonzana, resigned from his position following his nomination as the mayoral candidate.
The Bloemfontein-based Mangaung Metro Municipality's council is expected to elect the new mayor on Monday after the planned sitting was cancelled on Friday.
The metro has been without a mayor since former mayor, Olly Mlamleli, was ousted during a vote of no confidence in August 2020.
The Free State ANC's Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) previously announced Siyonzana as the successful mayoral candidate and he is expected to be elected as the new mayor of the metro after the position had been vacant for a year.
Siyonzana has been at the upper echelon of the metro when politicians such as Playfair Morule, Eva Moiloa, Getrude Mothupi, Thabo Manyoni, and Olly Mlamleli were mayors of the metro, since 2005. Siyonzana’s election as the mayoral candidate comes after former Mayor Olly Mlamleli was ousted in August 2020 during a vote of no confidence, which saw an ANC faction voting with opposition parties, including the DA, EFF, and the Freedom Front Plus (PP+).
