ANC expected to announce Mahumapelo foe as new NW premier | News Article

The ANC in the North West has postponed its planned media briefing to announce the province's new premier to 13:00 on Tuesday afternoon.

This is according to the ANC’s Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) spokesperson, Kenny Morolong.

A source with a great deal of knowledge tells OFM News that the ruling party in the province has allegedly resolved to announce the 64-year-old IPC member and former struggle stalwart and Robben Island prisoner, Bushy Maape, as Job Mokgoro’s successor as premier.

Another source says the latter was part of the leadership of the Revolutionary Council that led the "Supra Must Fall" campaign, following the sporadic protests in Mahikeng which led to the resignation of Mahumapelo as the premier in 2018.

Three candidates, including Maape, MEC for Finance Motlalepula Rosho, and the speaker of North West Legislature Susana Dantjie, were interviewed for the premiership position.

Meanwhile, the ANC has postponed its planned media briefing to 13:00 on Tuesday afternoon.

Former premier Mokgoro formally vacated his office on Sunday. OFM News previously reported that the ANC’s IPC coordinator, Hlomani Chauke, in July said the position of the premiership will not be a free for all. Chauke says the position of the premier is the competency of the national ANC structure and he also refused to comment further on the matter.

OFM News reported that the underfire Mokgoro, along with Cosatu's deployee, Job Dliso, and others were suspended from the party after they were accused of voting with the opposition.

“The ANC has a particular way of dealing with matters generally, even if we were to remove Mokgoro, it’s not going to be a free for all. There are organisational processes that will be engaged and that process will make recommendations nationally [to the NEC], and the [NEC] will not just decide and bring names or do anything. It’s the ANC processes, it starts at the province and the province will decide who must replace [the premier],” Chauke said.
