NW premier yet to resign─── LUCKY NKUYANE 06:54 Wed, 18 Aug 2021
The North West ANC's Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) appears to be facing a conundrum over the resignation of incumbent premier, Job Mokgoro.
This as it has emerged in Mahikeng that Mokgoro is yet to tender his resignation letter, as a member of the Provincial Legislature, after his term in office as premier expired on Sunday.
IPC coordinator, Hlomani Chauke, says the resignation process is underway. Chauke says Mokgoro's resignation letter will be received via the office of the Provincial Legislature speaker, Susana Dantjie, given that Mokgoro is a member of the legislature.
Chauke says the North West Provincial Government falls under Section 100, and "this then tells you that we have a challenge on service delivery firstly to our people and I think you will know that in the North West, most departments were not functional - the national government had to come and intervene.
"Comrade Job happened to come at that time and that's why we are even saying it on the statement, that he came at a time when there was serious turbulence in the province and therefore we believe comrade Job played his part".
Maape's appointment comes as Mokgoro finds himself in a predicament with his ruling party after it suspended his membership recently. Mokgoro, Job Dliso and others are accused of defying the ruling by voting with the opposition in the legislature.
Mokgoro replaced former premier and ANC Provincial Executive Committee Chairperson, Supra Mahumapelo, at the time. This was after Mahumapelo had resigned in 2018 following sporadic violent protests in the capital city over the alleged lack of service delivery.
On Tuesday, the removal of Mokgoro was met by a mini protest by members of the community, believed to be ANC members, outside the ANC's offices in Mahikeng. One of them included former South African Civic Organisation (Sanco) member, James Gadinabokao, who has been critical of the IPC and its coordinator Chauke.
