Road and infrastructure under scrutiny in NW─── LUCKY NKUYANE 13:04 Fri, 20 Aug 2021
Residents in the Klerksdorp-based Matlosana Municipality have bemoaned the deterioration of service delivery in different towns of the municipality.
Residents have also raised concerns about the decay of basic infrastructure, which includes roads and public buildings, amongst others, both in Kanana, Khuma, and Jouberton.
Meanwhile, ANC chief whip, Khaya Ndincede, says the ruling party in the municipality takes note of the service delivery challenges and they acknowledge the challenges. Ndincede says that the municipality has serious challenges of potholes, illegal dumping, and sewerage issues.
The municipality is yet to have a new mayor elected after former mayor, Maetu Kgaile, passed on in July 2021 due to Covid-19 complications and three candidates are running for the position.
“The reason why we wanted to elect the mayor as soon as yesterday, is for us to consolidate the executive municipality so that we can be able to hold our administration accountable in terms of the service delivery but we take note of those challenges, they are there but there is work to be done after. There is also work that still needs to be done upon the election of the executive mayor, to address the issue of the potholes,” adds.
OFM News previously reported on the protests, marches, pickets, and storming of the municipal building by both residents and the so-called business people to demand services and tenders. A few weeks ago, the waste refuse was uncollected for two weeks without any reasons being provided.
However, Ndincede has refused to comment on the issues of no waste removal.
“I cannot speak on the specific matter of the contract of the refuse removal between the municipality and the particular person who is a tenderpreneur, because that matter is the matter of the supply chain process. As councillors we are prohibited from speaking about those things. But what we said in the municipality was that what we need, actually, is to build the state capacity where the state might have its own trucks to collect refuse, whether the state must be able to patch potholes,” he further adds.
