NC Hawks nab two for alleged PPE fraud─── LUCKY NKUYANE 15:18 Mon, 23 Aug 2021
The Hawks in the Northern Cape have arrested the acting Head of the Department of Health and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for alleged PPE fraud amounting to at least R43 million on Monday afternoon.
The provincial Hawks spokesperson, Nomthandozo Mnisi, says the accounting officers have been nabbed for irregularly awarding the Covid-19 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and also for contravening the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).
Mnisi says they are scheduled to appear before the Kimberley Magistrate's Court on Monday. In April the Special Investigating Unit head, Advocate Andy Mothibi, announced the alleged irregular tender involving a provincial department, along with a certain municipality in the Northern Cape, was under scrutiny.
The Hawks in the province have been on the prawl, arresting former and current government employees on allegations of fraud, corruption and money laundering amounting to millions of rands.
Meanwhile, whilst unveiling the SIU's first-ever offices in the province, Mothibi confirmed that the SIU had received a number of corruption and maladministration allegations in the province. He said some of the allegations relate to the matter of PPE procurement. Mothibi further said consequence management needs to be affected so that thieves should see that there is consequence management and that the culture of impunity is being dealt with.
