Mokgoro says he was forced out of office | News Article

The outgoing North West premier, Job Mokgoro, says he was forced out of office in haste and for no reason.

This, as he announce his resignation as the premier on Thursday following weeks of rife speculation about his future. Announcing his resignation during a virtual briefing with NewzRoom Afrika on Thursday, he says he had met with President Cyril Ramaphosa on  Wednesday, as he had requested.

Mokgoro says following the meeting with Ramaphosa, he will later today submit his letter of resignation to the speaker of the Provincial Legislature Susana Dantjie.

The former struggle stalwart and ANC Imterim Provincial Committee (IPC) member, Bushy Maape, is set to take over from Mokgoro as premier. Mokgoro replaced another former Premier, Supra Mahumapelo, in 2018 following sporadic scenes of violence in Mahikeng.

"My departure closes a chapter of years' of service to the province and the nation in various cities," Mokgoro adds.

The North West provincial spokesperson, Brian Setswambung, confirms that Mokgoro has announced his resignation.
