Four arrested following violence over ANC BGMs in NW─── LUCKY NKUYANE 14:40 Thu, 26 Aug 2021
Four people are in custody after being arrested by the North West police in Swartruggens, following violence on Tuesday and Wednesday over the disputed ANC Branch General Meetings (BGM).
Police spokesperson, Adele Myburgh, tells OFM News that the group was arrested on Wednesday 25 August 2021 after violence broke out on Tuesday night and lasted until Wednesday morning.
Myburgh says the Public Order Police, which specialises in crowd control, were called in following the eruption of the violence. Myburgh says police are still monitoring the area and the situation remains tense.
Meanwhile, the ANC's Interim Provincial Committee's (IPC) spokesperson, Kenny Morolong, criticised the violence that erupted between disgruntled ANC members in Swartruggens.
Morolong told OFM News that the behaviour of these members is in contrast with the beliefs and values which governs the party.
