An artist is paying tribute to a struggle icon with a song, after Minister of Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, declared that Brandfort, the small town in the Free State, will be renamed after Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

Siphosenkosi Nkondlwane, also known as LaliBoi (rural boy), is a South African lyricist, guitarist and trumpeter, who fuses his Xhosa roots with his streetwise township flavour, and has now created a song that is dedicated to the late icon. He was born in the Eastern Cape, but is now residing in Johannesburg. Nkondlwane says the song that he dedicated to Madikizela-Mandela is titled Nomzamo and is produced by Spoek Mathambo. The song comes during Women's Month, at a time when women are facing a lot of problems in the country, including gender-based violence (GBV).

"I think it makes a lot of sense for Brandfort's name to be changed to Winnie Mandela Town, because she was banished there and the love she received when she arrived was out of this world. So, for that town to be named after Umaolady pushes the whole idea and vision that she had, because she believed so much that the future belongs to the youth. I feel that when the town Brandfort is renamed after Umam Mandela, it's going to be a constant reminder to the youth as well, not just of her existence but also her ideologies and wishes that she had for the youth in general," said Nkondlwane.

OFM News reported that the Free State government has postponed the official ceremony of the renaming of Brandfort that was supposed to be held on 20 August 2021. Meanwhile, the DA in the province raised concerns over the decision to rename the town, questioning what they view as a lack of public participation in the process.
