The fourth industrial revolution offers technology that can assist farmers with stock theft. This is according to the MEC of Agriculture, William Bulwane, after the department launched its Risk Management Solution Programme, which includes drones.

Bulwane says this is in response to the outcry of Free State farmers about stock theft. He said now that farmers have this technology, he hopes they will be able to protect and grow their live stock.

"We, as the Department of Agriculture, wanted to be part of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and decided to use technology to help farmers grow. So, part of the thing that came to my mind, was let's start with security - how can we secure using the drone, using trackers to track the cattle, because in this area - in that belt around Wepener, Ladybrand, Thaba Nchu, Botshabelo, the Caledon River and Bethlehem - people are complaining about cattle theft," said Bulwane.

Meanwhile, farmers have welcomed the new technology presented to them by the department. Cathy Jason, who is a farmer and owner of the Fortuna farm between Wepener and Dewetsdorp, told OFM News that the new technology has eased the life of the farmers, as it contributes to securing their life stock.
