The state of the healthcare system in the Free State will on Monday come under scrutiny. This, as the Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Thembi Siweya, is expected to undertake an oversight visit to the province.

Siweya, accompanied by Premier Sisi Ntombela, Deputy Minister of Health Sibongiseni Dlomo, Free State Health MEC Montseng Tsui, and the newly elected Executive Mayor of Mangaung Mxolisi Siyonzana, are expected to gather at the Free State Stadium where a vaccination drive is underway. The visit by the two deputy ministers comes just days after it has been confirmed that the 4th wave of the Covid-19 pandemic is expected to hit South Africa by November.

During a media briefing on Friday, Health Minister Joe Phaahla said the third wave is still a major concern for health experts, with the highest number of active cases recorded in KwaZulu-Natal, followed by the Western Cape, the Eastern Cape and the Free State.

With the Free State being amongst the provinces with the highest Covid-19 active cases at 15 698, the two ministers are expected to monitor how the vaccination programme  is proceeding in the province.

The Pelonomi Hospital is amongst the hospitals they are expected to visit later during the day.
