North West still under scrutiny─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 13:07 Mon, 30 Aug 2021
The state of municipalities in the North West and their ability to provide services to residents is again in the spotlight.
This, as the Leader of the DA, John Steenhuisen, has embarked on a week-long oversight visit to the province.
Steenhuisen kicked off his visit at a sewerage plant in Brits where residents have for years complained about sewage spillages in communities and the lack of water supply. Steenhuisen’s oversight visit comes as the province continues to make headlines over the position of the Premier with Treasury MEC Motlalepula Rosho having been appointed as an acting Premier following the resignation of Job Mokgoro. Mokgoro’s position has been making news for the past two weeks with his supporters opposing his resignation, stating that he was only being kicked to the curb for defying some of the ANC’s decisions.
Whist Bushy Maape has been elected to succeed Mokgoro, he could not assume office as Mokgoro only resigned as premier at the time, and not as a member of the provincial legislature leading to the appointment of Rosho.
Following days of uncertainty, Mokgoro finally left his position in the Legislature, making way for the newly elected Premier Bushy Maape to be sworn in. Meanwhile, the province continues to be the centre of attention. It’s municipal woes and the lack of service delivery are this week set to get under heavy criticism amidst the DA’s oversight inspections.
