NW suspect shoots himself whilst in custody─── LUCKY NKUYANE 06:39 Tue, 31 Aug 2021
Two North West police officials in Makapanstad are being probed by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for gross negligence.
This, after a 28-year-old man allegedly fatally shot himself whilst in their lawful captivity. IPID spokesperson, Grace Langa, in a statement says the two officers arrested the suspect for theft. She says once at the police station, the officer left the suspect alone and in his presence there was a bag with a gun.
As only one of his hands was cuffed to a chair, the suspect searched the bag, found a gun and then allegedly shot himself. He died on the scene. Langa says IPID is shocked and regards the incident as the worst negligence they have ever came across.
"The two detectives handcuffed the suspect's one arm to the chair while the other arm was not, and one of the officers allegedly told his colleague that he was going to the shop, and left a bag on the table where the suspect was seated.
"The other officer, who remained behind, also left the suspect to go to their supervisor's office because, according to him, the suspect was handcuffed to the chair," she adds.
It is alleged that the suspect shot himself in the head and died instantly on the scene.
"The officer who was left behind alleges that he did not know that the bag had a gun inside. IPID is investigating," Langa further adds.
