FS premier calls for Mangaung MMC to consist of more women | News Article

Women must be part of the new team of Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMCs) in the Mangaung Metro Municipality, according to the Free State premier Sisi Ntombela.

She was addressing scores of ANC Women's League (ANCWL) members on Naval Hill during a prayer session on Monday. This as the country continues to commemorate Women's Month.

She says during the nominations of the party's councillors recently, women went toe to toe with men because they had taken all nominations of councillors and also wanted to take proportional representation (PR) seats. Ntombela says during the municipal elections, at least 12  women should become mayors, of the 25 possible mayoral seats.

Addressing many women who had gathered on Naval Hill in Bloemfontein, Ntombela told them that if women were to be in charge, things would turn out differently.

"We must make sure that the municipal troikas, which is constituted of chief whips, mayors and speakers, should no longer be boy choirs. They must consist of women, We must make sure that women succeed. They must also be able to uplift others as envisaged by the former struggle icon, Charlotte Maxeke," she adds.

OFM News previously reported that the newly elected mayor of the Mangaung Metro Municipality, Mxolisi Siyonzana, said he will soon announce his team of MMCs.

This, after the metro had been operating with the MMC of the previous mayor, Olly Mlamleli, despite her removal as the mayor in August 2020.
