Trouble mounts for ANC over candidate lists─── LUCKY NKUYANE 15:06 Tue, 31 Aug 2021
Scores of irate ANC members and residents on Tuesday embarked on protests outside the ANC offices in Klerksdorp over the alleged rigging of ward councillors' candidate lists.
Former Dr Kenneth Kaunda's (Dr KK) Regional Secretary, Lopang Rothman, alleges that ward councillors were removed and replaced by those who did not receive the majority support of communities from their different wards. He says in some instances it was discovered that there were no community meetings held in certain wards. ANC members in Swartruggens, Moretele, Matlosana and JB Marks in the North West have criticised the ANC candidate list.
Rothman says if their concerns are not addressed by the ANC Electoral Committee, led by former President Kgalema Motlanthe and the Interim Provincial Committee (IPC), the candidates will picket outside the ANC headquarters in Luthuli House to show their dissatisfaction. The ANC IPC is set to comment.
The affected wards are as follows, as per the leaked lists.
ANC members in Matlosana are set to send letters of concern and disputes will be forwarded to Motlanthe, the Office of the ANC Deputy Secretary-General Jessie Duarte, and IPC Coordinator, Hlomani Chauke.
They demand that reports of the deployees of the Interim Regional Committee (IRC) meetings be considered and that the correct candidates are registered and where there were no meetings held, they be held to allow communities to exercise their rights.
OFM News previously reported that the ANC's IPC lamented the violence that erupted between disgruntled ANC members in Swartruggens over the Branch General Meetings (BGM) and community meetings.
It's understood some of the ANC members are unhappy about the nomination list and further alleges that there is a collation of the party's candidate list meant for the local government elections. This then led to violence in that area.
