Driving licence renewal system down in NW─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 11:32 Sat, 04 Sep 2021
Residents wishing to renew their driver's licence or vehicle licence disc in the North West’s JB Marks Local Municipality will have to brace themselves for another delay.
This, as the municipality serving the communities of Ventersdorp and Potchefstroom, among others, confirms the closure of their offices this weekend.
The municipality says driver learner licence testing and motor vehicle registration services will not be provided this Saturday due to the eNATIS system being down. As a result, their offices will remain closed.
The statement by the municipality comes days after Transport Minister, Fikile Mbalula, announced an extension for the renewal of driver's licences.
During a media briefing last week, Mbalula said driving licences that expired between 26 March 2020 and 31 August 2021 will be deemed valid until 31 March 2022.
His announcement followed pressure on government to extend the grace period as major backlogs at licence centres were reported.
South Africans had taken to social media platforms to complain about long queues at traffic centres, glitches with the online system and alleged corruption.
