Irate residents aligned to the Mangaung Concerned Community (MCC) have demanded that the Mayor of the troubled Bloemfontein-based Mangaung Metro Municipality (MMM) fire a member of the Mayoral Committee.

Residents who held a protest march at the Metro's premises on Wednesday, say mayor Mxolisi Siyonzana must fire the MMC of Transport, Patrick Monyakoane, with immediate effect. They alleged that Monyakoane is a dictator who overwrites decisions allegedly made by Siyonzana.

Addressing the acting municipal manager (MM), Sello More, outside the premises Wednesday morning, they say they are aware that some of the politicians are blocking some of the decisions. Residents have now dispersed following the receipt of a letter from More, addressed to them, in which it stated that Siyonzana is unable to reply to their demands as stipulated previously.

This letter informed the residents the mayor is held up on various engagements and will only be able to address them by Monday.

Security was tight this morning with armed security guards keeping a watchful eye on irate residents outside the metro's premises. This was after scores of angry residents cordoned off the entrance leading to the metro's Bram Fischer building.

Wednesday's protest march at the metro comes months after the shutdown protest was suspended, owing to negotiations between the leadership of the metro and the MCC in June 2021.

OFM News previously reported that disgruntled residents from towns, as far as Thaba Nchu, Botshabelo, and Soutpan, aligned to another group called Mangaung Service Delivery Forum (MSDF), marched to the offices of various government entities on 24 August 2021 to complain about fraud, high electricity tariffs, service delivery, a lack of job opportunities and more.

They also marched to the municipality to demand that the metro addresses issues of a lack of basic and quality service delivery, fraud, corruption, and issues of water and sanitation around townships in Mangaung.
