Child rapist sentenced to 20 years─── BLAINE JONES 13:48 Wed, 08 Sep 2021
Following the rape of a 13-year-old girl, the Olifantshoek Regional Court in the Northern Cape sentenced the 30-year-old Katlolo Melwane to 20 years imprisonment.
Northern Cape spokesperson, Dimakatso Sello, says Melwane raped the victim back in August of 2015. She was allegedly playing in the street when the accused grabbed and dragged her to a nearby veld where he raped and assaulted her. The victim's cousin, who was also a minor, tried to assist the victim, but Melwane threatened and chased him away with a knife.
Melwane was later arrested and was convicted and sentenced on Tuesday 7 September 2021 after several court appearances. He was sentenced to 20 years for rape and five years for assault. The sentences will run concurrently,” says Sello.
The Provincial Head for Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) in the Northern Cape, Nicky Mills, says: “No stone will be left unturned in the fight against any form of crime or violence perpetrated against women and children.”
