NC SAPS scrap waiting period to report a missing person | News Article

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape is concerned about the increase in the number of missing persons reported to the police lately.

According to the provincial spokesperson, Sergio Kock, the police implemented precautionary measures. These measures include no waiting period to report a missing person. The immediate response by the SAPS can save a life, Kock says. Kock says it is important to provide as much information as possible when reporting the case at your local police station. Kock advises people to always have a recent photograph with you, as well as notes of the clothes your child or the missing person is wearing.

“Elderly persons who suffer from Alzheimers or dementia, and persons with mental or physical disabilities must wear bracelets with emergency contact numbers on. Parents should always know where their children are at all times, especially toddlers. Children should be taught not to speak to strangers. As parents or guardians you must know your child’s friends, their names, numbers, and their parents’ names and numbers. Teach your child to never go anywhere alone,” Kock adds.

In the event of a loved one going missing, keep the investigating officer updated on any developments all the time, Kock says.
