The 37-year-old suspect allegedly stole a vehicle in the Welkom central business district (CBD) on Thursday.

Free State police spokesperson Motantsi Makhele said that the Welkom POP Reaction Team received information from Crime Intelligence about the suspected car thief, who was spotted in Welkom.

He said that police reacted immediately and the suspect was arrested soon after he was spotted at the Welkom CBD Taxi rank.

Makhele said that the police discovered the suspect was in possession of a remote jamming device used to jam the signal of vehicle’s central locking systems.

It is thought the suspect could be involved in another case of vehicle theft where a firearm was stolen.

According to Makhele, the suspect is expected to appear before the Welkom Magistrate Court on Monday, 13 September 2021.
