The state of roads in North West has come under scrutiny, with opposition parties demanding answers over incomplete construction work.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says the Department of Transport must account for deteriorating roads in the Greater Taung Municipality and many others in North West.

The party’s Mothusi Montwedi says the construction of roads in the Molelema and Matsheng Villages has been halted for over a year despite being far from completed.

The party is adamant the department must account for the delays in construction and poor road maintenance.

Transport Minister, Fikilile Mbalula, in a parliamentary reply says they are in talks with the provincial department.

Mbalula, in a written reply, assures members of the public that his department is prioritising road maintenance in the North West.

He says delays in the construction of the roads in the Molelema and Matsheng Villages is due to a dispute involving the contractor, and that the department will meanwhile maintain the roads until the litigation processes are complete.

“Upon completion of all the processes, the department will expedite procurement processes to ensure completion of all the outstanding work,” he added.
