The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is probing the death of a woman, following a commotion between the police and residents in the Free State.

The IPID spokesperson, Grace Langa, told OFM News that at about 01:10 on Sunday morning, the police from Tseseng, Qwaqwa, were contacted to attend to an alleged attempted robbery at an Indian shop in Hamafotha. She says when police arrived at the scene, people from a local tavern attacked the police vehicle and as a result one of the police officers fired a warning shot. The group ran off and the police left.

According to Langa, police were contacted after the incident and were told that a woman has been shot by the police officer who fired a shot. The deceased woman was identified as a 23-year-old female from Moeding Village.

“We managed to collect evidence, we managed to collect statements, and the post-mortem will be done tomorrow. The family of the deceased was informed of what happened. The deceased was shot in her forehead. Investigations are continuing,” said Langa.

She said that the body of the deceased was taken to the Phuthaditjhaba Mortuary in Qwaqwa. Langa further said that the motive behind an attack on the police vehicle is still not clear and investigations are still ongoing.
