#IEC experiences tech glitches as D-day for online registration looms─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 15:30 Mon, 20 Sep 2021
The Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) is experiencing heavy traffic on its online voter portal resulting in technical glitches.
This as the deadline for online voting registration draws to a close at midnight. The IEC urges South Africans to be patient with the online system and keep trying to register till the midnight deadline.
Meanwhile, applications for special voting have commenced and are set to close on 4 October 2021. IEC spokesperson, Mathabo Rasengane, tells OFM News that individuals who wish to apply for special voting on 30 and 31 October, either at their home or at a designated voting station near them, should have registered before they can apply. In other words, this midnight online deadline is everyone’s last opportunity to register. Rasengane explains special voting and who can apply.
Rasengane says citizens who will be working on 1 November, like police officers, nurses and IEC employees, can apply for special voting. Elderly citizens and those who are unable to stand in long queues, can also apply for this process.
This as the Democratic Alliance (DA) has lost its Constitutional Court bid to have the IEC’s decision to reopen candidate nominations declared unlawful and unconstitutional. This means that the candidate nomination process remains open till 17:00 pm on 21 September 2021.
Furthermore, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Minister, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, has gazetted the date of the municipal elections for 1 November. The gazette means that the voters’ roll will be sealed at midnight.
According to Rasengane, the number of new registered voters in the province thus far, via the in-person process, is 97 749. It remains to be seen how many voters will register overall as midnight approaches.
