The Free State Department of Health has encouraged residents of Welkom to show up at its Covid-19 vaccination pop-up site.
The department will today, amongst other services, offer eye care, dental care, cervical cancer and Tuberculosis (TB) as well as HIV screening.
The department’s programme will start at 9 am until 4 pm today.
The health department is set to intensify the vaccine drive amidst high Covid-19 active cases, which according to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD), sit at over 7 400 cases.
President, Cyril Ramaphosa, previously mentioned that more effort will be shifted to the province to attend to the issue of high numbers of Covid-19 infections.
He said for several months now the number of Covid-19 infections in the Free State and Northern Cape provinces had remained relatively high. Ramaphosa's statement comes after several schools in the two provinces were forced to shut their doors after pupils and staff tested positive in their numbers.
"The two provinces that stand out from the others are the Northern Cape and Free State, where the number of infections as a proportion of the population has remained relatively high for several months.
"We are therefore focusing our efforts on these provinces to understand what is driving these infections and what measures we need to take to bring them down," Ramaphosa announced.
