The much-anticipated unveiling ceremony of the new name for the Free State town, Brandfort, to Winnie Mandela, has been postponed.

This is according to the Free State Department of Arts and Culture.

The postponement comes few hours after the town's new board was defaced and vandalised.

Earlier, residents had raised their concerns about the huge amount of money being used on the project.

The departmental spokesperson, Zola Tankiso, in a media statement says the department has noted the keen interest in the renaming of the town of Brandfort after Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

Zola says the actual date of the unveiling has been rescheduled from 26 September 2021 to a later date that will be confirmed in due course.

"We would, therefore, like to apologize for the postponement. However, it is just a matter of time that this long outstanding honour being bestowed upon Mama Madikizela-Mandela is officially conducted in a befitting ceremony," he adds.

OFM News previously reported that the Provincial Government said it was disgusted by the defacing and vandalism of the newly erected Winnie Mandela town name board.

Premier Sisi Ntombela's spokesperson, Sello Pietersen, said this action seeks to defeat nation-building.
