Poor service delivery leads to mushrooming community forums | News Article

Inadequate service delivery, dilapidated infrastructure, and raw sewage leaks, among other things, have resulted in various community forum leaders contesting the local government elections in the Free State.

Tshepo Maredi, who is one such candidate in Masilonyana, says he entered into an agreement with other independent candidates from Brandfort, Winburg, Verkeerdevlei and Theunissen to form an alliance as they are experiencing the same service delivery problems.

He says other issues such as maladministration and a lack of job opportunities have also led to their decision to contest the local elections.

“We decided, let’s take a stance to try to fight these tender allocations and people from outside Masilonyana, coming in to take whatever is left of Masilonyana,” said Maredi.

Meanwhile, Maredi said that they are struggling with resources as independent candidates, because of a lack of funds.

He says that they depend on donations from community members, as they do not want to be funded by political businesses.
