Tender fraud: NC Health senior and two company directors in hot water─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 13:15 Fri, 08 Oct 2021
Two Northern Cape company directors and a former head of the Department of Health are in hot water after they were charged with fraud, amounting to millions.
The Northern Cape Hawks spokesperson, Philani Nkwalase, says the suspects will be appearing in the Kimberley Magistrate's Court on Friday after they handed themselves over to the Hawks this morning. He says in 2017, the former HOD, who once was a police officer, allegedly irregularly awarded a tender to the Defensor Electronic Security System company.
He further alleges that the directors of the company submitted fraudulent documents in order to gain unfair advantage over other companies. According to Nkwalase, the security company was awarded a tender worth R224 million in August and October 2017, however, it later escalated to an amount exceeding R384 million. He says the matter was reported to the Hawks in December 2017, when an inquiry was registered.
Nkwalase says the inquiry was turned into a docket case in 2020 culminating in the arrest of and subsequent court case on Friday.
