The mayor of the troubled Bloemfontein-based Mangaung Metro has on Tuesday embarked on a vigorous Reclaim the City Campaign.

Mxolisi Siyonzana says his campaign entails service delivery to communities of the metro, which includes cleaning of illegal dumping sites, fixing of potholes, infrastructure, and water and sanitation issues.

These issues have plagued the metro for quite some time and often brought them at crossroads with irate residents who demand water, flushing toilets, and clean streets. However, Siyonzana, who started the campaign in Bloemfontein at Grassland Meadows by cleaning illegal dumping, says these thorny issues will soon be a thing of the past.

“We made a contract with our people and we indicated that we are going to clean the city, fix the potholes, and make sure that it’s attractive. We want everybody to live in a clean environment,” he adds.

He also mentions that potholes across the city and across the metro will be fixed and efforts to see this done have already commenced.

The parks - we are working on them and cleaning them. We are also working on issues of water and sanitation because we have leakages and sewage spillages. We are also working on a [waterborne sewerage] system,” he adds.

The metro has previously faced various protests from different groups of community forums which demanded that the metro address issues of service delivery.
