The North West Education MEC says a school principal, captured in a video allegedly assaulting a suspended 17-year-old grade 10 learner in Klerksdorp, has been placed on special leave, pending an investigation.
MEC Maphefo Matsemela has condemned the violent Milner High School incident that allegedly involved the principal. MEC Matsemela says she has established a team to immediately conduct an intensive investigation of the incident so that appropriate action could be taken.
According to an earlier report by OFM News, a video depicts a school principal, allegedly in a scuffle and pinning down a 17-year-old grade 10 schoolboy on the floor. The video is now doing the rounds on social media. Matsemela says "it is alleged that after the school assembly in the morning, the school management noticed that the school pupil, who was on suspension for other disciplinary issues, was seen at school and when addressed about his violation of the suspension rule, matters got out of control and the situation got physical".

“I take this time to strongly condemn any act of violence or assault that takes place within our school environment against any educator or learner. I have established a team to conduct an intensive immediate investigation of the incident so that appropriate action could be taken. The principal's special leave is to allow the investigations to run smoothly without any interruption.
"Yesterday, in a meeting with different stakeholders, it was agreed that teaching and learning will resume today, Friday 15 October 2021," Matsemela further adds.
OFM News previously reported that the incident has since left residents fuming. They called for the alleged victim to open a case of assault against the alleged perpetrator.
Issues of school violence recently made headlines in the province and over the years, students and teachers have been assaulted, and in some instances, it ends in a fatal stabbing.
