The North West Hawks arrested 87 suspects, who are due to appear before the Orkney Magistrate's Court on Monday 25 October 2021, after a shootout that wounded eight and killed six.
Hawks spokesperson, Katlego Mogale, says amongst the suspects between the ages of 25 and 49, eight were wounded and six died in a shootout at Orkney with members of the Hawks on Wednesday evening.
The suspects are facing charges of attempted murder, illegal possession of gold, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, illegal possession of prohibited firearms, theft, and conspiracy to commit an offense.
It is reported that upon information received, the Hawks descended upon the identified shaft where they were met with the suspects' gunfire. The team returned fire, wounding eight and killing six suspects. In total, 87 were arrested. One Hawks member was wounded. The wounded suspects were taken to hospital under police guard.
"The team seized two minibuses, Illegal mining paraphernalia, gold-bearing material, eleven Illegal firearms ( 3 x shotguns, 3 x rifles, 4 x pistols, and 1 x revolver) and bags of food," says Mogale.
