Welkom in #WaterCrisis─── BLAINE JONES 12:08 Sun, 24 Oct 2021
The city of Welkom in the Free State finds itself in a water crisis, with scenes of residents at Doornpan desperately gathering water as large areas of Matjhabeng are still without water.
In an interview with OFM News, DA member Piet Botha says Eskom decided to cut the electricity supply to Sedibeng's Balkfontein and Virginia plants.
Botha says Eskom gave them a notice, and on 15 October, Sedibeng sent a letter to Matjhabeng saying Eskom is going to cut electricity and they would not be able to deliver water to Matjhabeng and other areas.
This past week on Tuesday most parts of Matjhabeng were without water. Botha says Matjhabeng paid an amount of R10 million to Sedibeng to try and resolve the issue, but it wasn’t enough.
“On Tuesday afternoon, the workforce of Sedibeng decided to strike, because they received a letter from Sedibeng saying that Sedibeng will not be able to pay their salaries on the 20th, as per usual. The workers walked off the site, closed most of the valves, and since then most of Matjhabeng has been without water,” says Botha.
