An investigation into the death of a woman from Welkom has been launched after their generator allegedly exploded.
The incident allegedly occurred during load-shedding when the 41-year-old Riana Barkley, who resided in Lakeview, Welkom, died after their generator exploded.
In a Facebook post, her neighbour, Petru Koch, says Barkley went out to switch off her generator after hearing a strange blow, and as the power was about to return at 14:00, she attempted to turn the generator off and it exploded. According to Koch, she was the first person on the scene and was with Barkley until the ambulance took her to hospital at about 15:10. She died a day later.
Welkom police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, confirms his previous report and says that the incident allegedly occurred during load-shedding when the 41-year-old Riana Barkley switched on the generator and it exploded. Thakeng says she sustained burn wounds and passed on at the hospital. She was taken to the Mediclinic Welkom.
