The Emfuleni local municipality confirmed an 11kv cable was stolen at the NW-7 substation, causing the Town substation to trip.

Technicians are currently on site and investigating the extent of the damage at the two substations.

Vereeniging suffered power outages yesterday, due to attempted cable theft at the Duncanville power station.

In September, OFM News reported about three security guards, who were arrested at the same power station, after they were found in possession of suspected stolen copper cables.

Cable theft is reportedly on the rise in the Vaal, where residents have allegedly intercepted and assaulted criminals who were caught stealing overhead copper cables at the Kwaggastroom train station.

Following today's incident, the municipality will notify residents when supply will be restored.

No arrests have been made.
